-          take a large multiband band geotiff with a mask side car file, squash the 3+ bands into 1 band

Squashing might be unnecessary. If you open the .msk file first the document is set to 1-bit colour mode, then anything dropped on top is converted to the same mode. In effect squashing on import. The only question is whether it’s more efficient to let Gimp do this or to process ahead of time with gdal_translate. Which is faster probably depends on local conditions.

(this is so awesome. I just have to keep saying that. :)
