[gdal-dev] GSoC 2026 – Inquiry on Priority Development Areas in GDAL

Hi,

Over the past few months, I’ve been contributing to GDAL, primarily in
documentation, testing, and recent CLI/vector-related improvements
(including FID behavior and related cleanup). Through this process, I’ve
been trying to better understand the broader structure and development
direction of the project.

As I prepare a GSoC proposal, I would like to ensure that it aligns with
areas that are genuinely useful to the project. From the community’s
perspective, are there specific subsystems or themes that would benefit
from sustained work (e.g., core vector/raster functionality, CLI
consistency, driver behavior, testing infrastructure, performance, or
bindings)?

If there are areas that you feel would particularly benefit from focused
development over a GSoC-sized timeframe, I would greatly appreciate your
guidance.
