I have problems installing the gdal source code 1.4.2 tar.gz from the site <A HREF="http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/DownloadSource">http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/DownloadSource</A> in ubuntu distrution<BR>
<BR>
I am writing in the shell the following commands<BR>
<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~$ cd Desktop<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~/Desktop$<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~/Desktop$ gunzip gdal-1.4.2.tar.gz<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~/Desktop$ tar xvf gdal-1.4.2.tar<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~/Desktop$ cd gdal-1.4.2<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~/Desktop/gdal-1.4.2$<BR>
root1@root1-laptop:~/Desktop/gdal-1.4.2$ ./configure --prefix=INSTALL_DIR<BR>
configure: error: expected an absolute directory name for --prefix: INSTALL_DIR<BR>

Does anyone knows why i have this error or is there a guide about installing gdal in ubuntu with the specific steps?<BR>
