Martin,
After studying geo metadata interoperability and discovery quite some time I
came to a similar conclusion like our fellows of digital library science,
namely that we have (1) an interoperability and (2) a
chicken-and-egg-problem: There will be no single 'geometadata Google web
app' nor on a 'one-size-fits-all' standard. It's probably even not
desirable.
So what's perhaps reasonable is to take a stepwise approach beginning with a
simple solution. In order to get 100% interoperability to move metadata
around we need to agree to an object model, an encoding and a
protocol. Actually - because this seems not 100% feasible - we need mappings
(conversions or crosswalks as they say in OAI-PMH) between different object
models.
Regarding the object model something like a sligthly extended Dublin Core
element set could be a solution for the first step. Regarding the protocol
there is still more discussion needed. Actually Raj just made 'a modest CSW
proposal' at the dclite4g list:
