As Stephen pointed out as well- the ZipCode Tabulation Areas (the
polygons you're referring to) do *not* actually match directly to real
zip code 'boundaries' since zip codes are carrier routes and not
polygons.  There are, however, actual zip codes associated with edges in
the detailed (street segment) TIGER data, which I believe do get updated
when Census realizes they need to be (such as with the MAF project).
