Hi Birgit,

You can use the following Marine Geospatial Ecology Tool
(MGET<http://code.env.duke.edu/projects/mget>
):

GSHHS 1.4 Database to ArcGIS
Polygons<http://code.env.duke.edu/projects/mget/browser/MGET/Trunk/PythonPackage/dist/TracOnlineDocumentation/Documentation/ArcGISReference/GSHHS.ToArcGISPolygonFeatures.html?format=raw>
Creates an ArcGIS polygon feature class from the Global Self-consistant
Hierarchical High-resolution Shorelines (GSHHS) database, version 1.4 or a
later compatible version.
