[Geodata] about OSGeo geodata catalog

I'm Jorge from OSGeo Spanish Language Local Chapter and gvSIG project.

As probably you know, gvSIG is a nice SDI client supporting WxS
services, gazetteer and metadata. One of the aims of the project is to
support and promote SDI's and free geodata access and it's pretty
interesting to know that one of the most successful sections of the
official web page is the one related with free geodata[1].

On the other hand, at OSGeo-es last meeting in Girona we talked about
starting a group to catalog free geodata resources (specially WMS
servers) and some people started a geodata group[2][3].

The day after this meeting I attended a Geonetwork workshop with Jeroen
Ticheler as instructor (anyone knows someone better?) and we talk
briefly about having an OSGeo metadata catalog available for promoting
these free geodata resources.

My question to this committee is if an OSGeo catalog exists but no one
is promoting it, or if it doesn't, do you think having and OSGeo
metadata catalog for free geodata could be interesting? If you think so,
 I would enforce my colleagues to move efforts to work on the catalog as
a main reference for anyone asking for geodata.

Well, at gvSIG we think this is an interesting initiative but we don't
want to duplicate efforts, if OSGeo doesn't publish a catalog, gvSIG
will try it, but before starting such work, we should ask the OSGeo
fellows :-)
