Suchith, Tom and OSGEO Crew,
Yes, so very true! We have had winners from China, from Buffalo New York USA, as well as Trento and Como Italy, the UK and Germany. And, we are very hungry for winners from Hungary and every other place on the planet that has a need for seeing themselves in a virtual globe. The exciting 'new' news is that we will have web version in another month or two that runs inside your browser (in addition to Java, Android and iOS versions already there, http://goworldwind.org/). We will have more information on the web version of World Wind soon! Stay tuned! And it'll be soon enough to be used in the Europa Challenge, http://eurochallenge.como.polimi.it/

I might add that Prof Phil Davis at Del Mar College in Texas USA (and maybe Charles Schweik) are developing a GIS course using this NASA open source software. For other GIS professors out there, maybe there's a way to work together (let's talk). We need to challenge a future to see ourselves as one planet, constructively engaged in mutual collaboration. And with things warming up (our polar AC is in peril), we don't have an infinite amount of time to achieve this collective spirit.
-Patrick

Hi Tom,

Please note that though the name of the challenge is "Europa" it is open to all students globally not just Europe, so please encourage your students to participate. For example, one of the winner teams from last year was from China. We encourage all our labs globally to promote this initiative to their students and have project teams for this.

Also, please contact Charlie directly as he will be leading a US grant proposal to build upon Spatial literacy ideas using NASA World Wind for educators globally.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Suchith

This is fantastic. Charlie - I wonder if doing something similar in the US would be grant worthy?

Tom

The aim of this challenge is to inspire ideas for building great applications that serves the INSPIRE Directive and uses NASA's open source virtual globe technology World Wind. Details at http://eurochallenge.como.polimi.it/

This NASA challenge attracts the best minds to develop their ideas covering a broad range of domains from transportation to air quality to linked data. The previous competition winners work is available at

We thank Professor Maria Brovelli (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) and Patrick Hogan (NASA) for their efforts for this initiative which adds great momentum to our efforts to promote openness in education and research worldwide.

It is also our great pleasure to announce the inaugural ICA-OSGeo-ISPRS Awards for Open Geospatial Science for the winning student teams at this competition. We thank the ICA, OSGeo and ISPRS for the generous support for the student awards. The awards will be given at the FOSS4G-Europe 2015 in Como, Italy (July 2015).

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) http://www.osgeo.org is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2006 whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open source geospatial technologies and data. OSGeo software and technologies are the major contributor for the global geospatial economy and used by millions of users in academia, governments and business worldwide and rapidly increasing.

International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) http://www.isprs.org is a non-governmental organisation devoted to the development of international cooperation for the advancement of photogrammetry and remote sensing and their applications.
