Hi Lene,
It is also very important to recognise the educators . Anyone (both students, colleagues or wider public) can nominate any educator who they believe has contributed to Open Education in Geo domain. The aim is to highlight the excellent work done by educators for Open Education Principles building upon open software, open data, open standards, open educational resources etc for the benefit of the wider humanity. It can be short (Summer Schools, Trainer programs etc ) and long (full semester) courses both online and class based.
Anyone except those in Award Committee are eligible for the award.
Anyone who wish to nominate should send the details by email to Professor Charlie Schweik - Committee Chair with the subject header - Nomination for Geo for All - Open Education Award 2015. This should include the Course leader details with the url to the course details (or attachment with the course details). Ideally if there is website for the program it will be helpful.
All applications should be received by 28th Feb 2015 before 12:00 GMT to be considered for this award.
So please send your nominations to honour and recognise the educators who made it possible and will be an inspiration to others to build upon for future years. It will also acknowledge their excellent contributions to open knowledge and being good global citizens by helping spread the benefits of education to all. Central to "Geo for All" mission is the belief that knowledge is a public good and Open Principles in Education will provide great opportunities for everyone.
Best wishes,
Suchith

Sorry for being a bit negative. Who should nominate lecturer and course. Students can evaluate the lecturer for teaching capabilities, but not what they have learned about GIS. It's pretty hard for a student who has not had similar classes to compare.
Should the lecturer tell students about the nomination? Should it be colleagues or how do you see this setup?
For a student award it is much easier – we - as lecturers know when we see a brilliant work. And if one of my student won an award – I would feel great happiness.
What I would prefer – is to send in 2-3 tutorials for Open Use – and the let orthers evaluate /comment. That would be of benefit for me as a lecturer/tutorial writer – I would much more like a qualified feedback than an award.
Kind regards

Hi Patrick,
Many thanks for this kind contribution to the "Open Education Award" we will give to honour and thank the greatest contributions to Open Education principles in the Geo domain. I will speak with Maria and should be able to arrange free conference registration for the winner to attend FOSS4G-Europe. As Jeff will be there at FOSS4G-E , he as the OSGeo President can directly give the award to the winner.
Best wishes,
Suchith

Maria and Suchith and Charlie and OSGEO Community,
If anyone else will donate to this ‘Teacher Award’
maybe to help cover their travel expenses, I am willing to ‘match’ that with one NASA crystal bull
(~€200 Euros out of my own pocket)
See it here:
http://eurochallenge.como.polimi.it/
But it will have different text, maybe:

Hi Patrick,
This is great idea that will help to further make impact in Openness in GeoEducation .
Out of the 5k USD we have got allocated for ICA-OSGeo labs from OSGeo budget we have earmarked 3500 USD for website development requirements ( to be finalized with more inputs from all and OSGeo Board) and 1000 USD for NASA WW Challenge student winner teams, so we still have 500 USD to plan some activity to further our aims.
So i suggest that we plan an award for the Course leader/Lecturer of the best Geospatial course ( online or class based) based on Open Principles . That will be a great way to honour and recognise the educators who made it possible and will be an inspiration to others to build upon for future years. We will use the same Award Committee that we set up for the ICA-OSGeo-ISPRS student awards to decide the best course based on nominations recieved to Charlie Schweik (chair of the Award Committee) Email - cschweik at pubpol.umass.edu<mailto:cschweik at pubpol.umass.edu<mailto:cschweik at pubpol.umass.edu%3cmailto:cschweik at pubpol.umass.edu>> before 28th Feb 2015. Please note that all members of the Award Committee http://wiki.osgeo.osuosl.org/wiki/Ica-osgeo-isprs_award will not be eligible even if they are running excellent programs - sorry folks :)
The Award will be announce on 9th March (start of Open Education Week) and given at FOSS4G Europe conference in Como. We will send a formal call on this Course leader Award soon.
We have some courses run by many universities in our list itself, so feel free to nominate those courses and we now have opportunity to recognise both the students and educators.
Best wishes,
Suchith

Suchith,
How about an award for the best GIS course! Teachers need GIS love too!
1. This can be the complete syllabus for the class, as open source! This would allow other teachers to benefit and improve the course (still open source). The next year's award might go to who has improved that course the most! This is the beauty of open source, we continually rise to collectively-stand on each other's shoulders. And ^all^ of our students are the beneficiaries.
2. And maybe another category for best ^online^ GIS course (open source of course).
3. And maybe an award for the best student-produced GIS app (open source). To make this a more reasonable exercise for the 'judges,' each GIS teacher would be able to submit just one of their student-team's projects, or maybe one for each class taught. That would help improve and narrow the field of candidates.

OSGeo Colleagues,
I would like to get your ideas on how we can contribute to Open Education Week (9-13 March 2015) activities to further accelerate Openness in GeoEducation. See details below.
If any of your universities are arranging local events coinciding with Open Education week, it will be great to build upon synergies. We will be arranging the March webinar of "Open Geospatial Science & Applications " webinar series on that week also.
Best wishes,
Suchith
