[Ica-osgeo-labs] Geo for All - "Open Education Award"

Dear Open GeoSpace, Open Minds and Open Source Folks,

A challenge. . .

Please note, this FOSS4G crystal bull is a ^matching grant^ that is challenging others to donate as well, at whatever level. So, this one comes forward as long as another €200 comes in from others, whether alone or combined. Alternatively, if it is recommended to receive cash instead of a trophy, I am glad to do that instead. A €20 here-and-there adds up. Let’s recognize the best with a boost!

Please help us find organizations to donate!!! We want Charlie Schweik to have a real kitty to work with. Maria Brovelli needs help too! She is trying to make generous accommodations for students and others at the best FOSS4G yet! The website is a gorgeous start! Como should be very proud to host such an auspicious event!

A thought. . .

There is no more important profession on the planet than welcoming our children to this world we find ourselves in, and that welcome should be with the best education possible. Rewarding those who do this well, especially when they share their ‘how-to’ talents with the rest of us, is an honor we must strongly commit to.

A concern. . .

These are especially challenging trying times of a rapidly warming world that will continue to impact our ability to survive, as does the increasing concentration of wealth that wants to accelerate consumption and greatly limits democratic choices for a more sustainable future.

Out of the 5k USD we have got allocated for ICA-OSGeo labs from OSGeo budget we have earmarked 3500 USD for website development requirements ( to be finalized with more inputs from all and OSGeo Board) and 1000 USD for NASA WW Challenge student winner teams, so we still have 500 USD to plan some activity to further our aims.

So i suggest that we plan an award for the Course leader/Lecturer of the best Geospatial course ( online or class based) based on Open Principles . The Award will be announce on 9th March (start of Open Education Week) and given at FOSS4G Europe conference in Como. We will send a formal call on this Course leader Award soon.

We have some courses run by many universities in our list itself, so feel free to nominate those courses and we now have opportunity to recognise both the students and educators.

How about an award for the best GIS course! Teachers need GIS love too!

1. This can be the complete syllabus for the class, as open source! This would allow other teachers to benefit and improve the course (still open source). The next year's award might go to who has improved that course the most! This is the beauty of open source, we continually rise to collectively-stand on each other's shoulders. And ^all^ of our students are the beneficiaries.

2. And maybe another category for best ^online^ GIS course (open source of course).

3. And maybe an award for the best student-produced GIS app (open source). To make this a more reasonable exercise for the 'judges,' each GIS teacher would be able to submit just one of their student-team's projects, or maybe one for each class taught. That would help improve and narrow the field of candidates.
