[Ica-osgeo-labs] Student Awards - Inputs needed from the community

Helena,
Go Wolfpack! Are you really a bunch of wild wolves there at North Carolina?!
https://www.ncsu.edu/athletics/
Poor Suchith, he just wanted to leave it up to the Board to decipher the details of how to do the most good with OSGEO support. I will suggest the wise thing might be is to allow the 'awards committee,' as Suchith suggested, to do what is best. That's what they are there for, I'll hope!

The proposal is to go forth and do good. Suchith is the macro advisor and the OSGEO 'awards committee' is the micro-decider. If we do this, how do we do this? And the rest of us should be finding more $$$€€€ for Charlie Schweik and crew to smartly put to good work!

Suchith,
I think we need to be more specific on when and for what the 10K will be spent.
For example, if there are 3 FOSS4G conferences per year (Euro, NA, World) and each asks for $1000, are we requesting 10K to be spent over 3 years? What if we have 5 events each year?
Maybe I am misunderstanding what the 10K is supposed to be for but I think that this is what needs to be clarified in the proposal.
Thank you, Helena

It is important that there is structures in place to support this for future years and not just an adhoc arrangements and OSGeo should take the actions for establishing a strong framework for this.

Georg Gartner (ICA President) will be there at FOSS4G-Europe 2015 at Como to deliver keynote and to present the award.

So all ideas/suggestions welcome.
>
> Hence to help start things, we request OSGeo Board to allocate 10k USD from the OSGeo budget for initiating the ICA-OSGeo-ISPRS Student Awards scheme. This a seed amount to start the initiative. This will be administered by the OSGeo Treasurer and this Award Committee with Charlie Schweik as chair will be responsible for approving which conference/events/competitions to fund the awards. Also we will invite other interested organisations who wish to support this Award initiative to directly send their funding to OSGeo and the OSGeo treasurer will administer this for us. It is important that a system and structure is setup in place so that it builds upon for the future.
