[Ica-osgeo-labs] Africa thematic - Your ideas inputs needed

Colleagues, I also understand from Phillip Davis post [1] that 4000 students are enrolled for their March 2015 cohort . This is really amazing. Thanks to all colleagues in GeoAcademy for their hardwork and efforts.
"The GeoAcademy is using QGIS 2.8 to provide Massively Open Online Courses through the Canvas Network to students around the globe for free. We currently enrol 4,000 students in our March 2015 cohort"
This might be also a good opportunity for our Africa colleagues to inform educators in Africa to make use of this as "Train the Trainer" opportunity and use the materials at https://github.com/FOSS4GAcademy for their teaching requirements
Best wishes,
Suchith

Subject: [Ica-osgeo-labs] Africa thematic - Your ideas inputs needed
Hi Rania, Bridget,
Good to see these ideas for Africa started. I am sure our colleagues from other regions will be very happy to share their experiences with you. It is great to hear about the teacher training initiatives in Egypt and South Africa. They are the perfect launchpads for expanding Openness in GeoEducation not just for Africa but globally and we look forward to sharing ideas and experiences.
It has been by colleagues informing others that been the key for our expansion . Conferences and events were very key to help spread the message. For example, if you look at Europe, Americas and Asia, our colleagues have been very active in presenting "Geo for All" message in all major conferences and that helped others know about the initiative and join. All our colleagues have been doing this in their presentations etc by adding slides on the initiative and this has had a big impact. It was the reason (around 6 months back i think), that we decided to put together a master overview slide of our initiative (which can be downloaded from http://www.geoforall.org below the map), so that everyone can make use of the slides in their presentations.
So, if you and other colleagues in Africa are presenting in any events/conferences etc please download this master slides and add few slides as relevant to your presentations at events etc and also send colleagues the website details, so they know about this initiative. Our biggest problem in Africa was that we just did not have the connections to the universities and educational institutes etc across Africa , to get our message to colleagues there. But with you all now leading this , i am sure we will have great momentum there.
I also request all our global colleagues to also give your ideas/suggestions on how we can all work for expanding Geoeducation opportunities in Africa to Rania, Bridget and Serena.
Best wishes,
Suchith

Hello Bridget,
happy to hear from you and to know about your efforts in teacher training initiatives in SA. we have also the same initiative in Egypt. Indeed, it would be good to broaden our projects and activities.
I hope that everyone in this group to share her/his ideas through Africa wiki page http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GeoForAll_Africa. we want this wiki page to be the first point of contact for the new members, all regional members and others because communication through wiki page will be easier than mailing list for us and for everyone who want to know about us and our activities. we can share our news through wiki page and mailing list also.

Greeting from SA
It would be impertinent for me to suggest a strategic plan for Africa!
What I can contribute are my experience in using Open GIS resources in secondary education. What has worked and what has not.
We are involved in a number of internal projects which I am very happy to share. I am not an academic, I taught at the coal face for over 20 years and I am now a business woman. I am not affiliated with any academic institution although I have partnered with many. I am the Head of SAGTA (SA Geography Teachers’ Association) and we would be happy to broaden our teacher training initiatives. The AAG and EIS-Africa have given us wonderful support.
My networks are schools in SA, both private and public. It would be good to broaden our current projects.
May I throw one into the mix. We have a SAGTA conference outside Durban SA in August where we will be introducing QGIS to many rural schools.
Perhaps a Skype discussion to meet, discuss, share ideas and plan?

Colleagues,
Following Sergio's excellent suggestion and inputs from the community ,we now have "Geo for All" Region wise and Subject Thematic groups formally established. The webpages of all the 5 regional groups and subject wise thematic groups ready.
With the region wise thematic groups established, the chairs of this are now the contact points for any new labs to be established in that region to contact and the mailing list becomes the first point of contact for the new members and all regional members in the region can use the list for collaborating on regional funding calls, FOSS4G local conferences etc. They will also be the administrators of the mailing lists and they will use the wikipages to develop their ideas with inputs from all members in their groups. This way we can make sure it is scaleable and meets local/region requirements/needs. All ideas welcome.
