Suchith,
I’ve got a pretty bad attitude on anything substantial coming from large organizations, particularly CMU, in the area of Smart Cities. So I am probably the wrong person to ask. Getting a basic app into place with just a couple cities working in concert is all we need for a seed crystal. What we will get from these large organizations is more ‘think tank’ stuff that talks endlessly about ‘what is needed and why’ without a whit of sustainable applied results to show for all the grandiose noise.
The MetroLab Network (http://metrolabnetwork.heinz.cmu.edu/), announced at the White House Smart Cities Forum, seeks to strengthen and create partnerships between metro areas and their respective universities to research, develop, and deploy innovative technologies to address challenges facing the nation’s urban areas. The Network, supported by a $1 million grant from MacArthur, will provide the opportunity to share successes, address challenges, and build shared platforms for experimentation and data among cities and universities to improve the urban condition. - See more at: https://www.macfound.org/press/from-field/network-support-city-university-partnerships/
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we are doing all we can to get that seed crystal sparkling in the sunlight of G4A. With a million bucks, we could have more than a seed crystal, something more like a golden egg-laying goose, and urban dwelling one, also popping out baby geese of similar sustainable ilk, one for every city on the planet. To quote Mercutio to Romeo “We waste our lights in vain, like lamps by day.” We know what is needed, we just need to do it, and scale accordingly as cities join up. We may be a bit slow now, but to quote the Friar to Romeo “Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast.”
