Thanks Chris. I dont think it is prize money that is important but more providing opportunity for showing some good examples of spatial literacy etc

btw I just recieved a email query from a colleague who is concerned about that MapStory, is using Cesium, which has their ^new^ 'Pro' version ahead. Is this true? If so, i am also very concerned.

I remember, that i emailed you explictly on this http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/geoforall/2016-February/002636.html and you said you havent made any decision yet and i expected that you will take into full consideration my request . I fully believed your commitment that "We fully intend to have MapStory.org be free to use for everyone on earth, forever. "

So may i request that you please confirm MapStory's plans with Cesium asap. Geo for All has strong commitment on Open Principles, so we need to make sure we fully understand the long term plans of MapStory . If MapStory (which is a great initiative) is going ahead with plans to build around Cesium , then we will have reconsider our support for MapStory. I hope you can understand my thinking.

It will be really disappointing for us as we were seeing this as a great opportunity to have an open alternative to properitery equivalents and expand geoeducation opportunity more faster. I really hope you will confirm that MapStory will be build fully on Open tools maybe please look for extending additional features for 3D support using current open tools ( World Wind, OpenLayers etc) which can be expanded to replace any planned dependence on Cesium. Will you be open to explore these ideas.

I really hope you and MapStory will be part of Open Principles in geoeducation.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Suchith,

Great idea. How large of a prize do you need us to put up?

Quick thought? Maybe a MapStory Challenge which might be a good and easy and low learning curve way to get "geoinformation" ideas to the Media and Information Literacy community who might be new to GIS?

Chris, Jon - any ideas/suggestions for this?

Dear colleagues,

I have been informed by Professor Karl Donert (President, EUROGEO) of this excellent opportunity. Details below.

It is a good opportunity to involve "Geo for All" community in the Global Week to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO. I think it is a great idea to join synergies for raising the profile of "geo" through "geo-media" and "geoinformation" in the Media and Information Literacy community.

I also see that the feature event for Global MIL Week is at Sao Paulo Brazil from November 2nd – 5th 2016. We should make use of our Brazil network to have a strong presence at this also. Details at https://en.unesco.org/global-mil-week-2016

So may i request your ideas and volunteers to lead planning for this to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO?

Best wishes,

Suchith

Hi Suchith

Saw this (below) and thought it could be of interest. As part of its advocacy work, EUROGEO has been (somewhat peripherally) involved in this group, trying to raise the profile of "geo" through "geo-media" and "geoinformation" in the MIL (Media and Information Literacy) community.

It would seem to me that this could be quite a nice opportunity we should maybe try to take advantage of.

How about activating the "Geo for All" community in this Global Week to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO? We could encourage some common "Geoforall" event names and hashtags for instance and promote through newsletters and Web sites?

Let me know what you think ?

Best Wishes

Karl

This Global Call is open across the world, building up to the Global MIL Week celebrations that will take place from 31 October to 5 November. The feature event for Global MIL Week be held in Sao Paulo Brazil from November 2nd – 5th 2016. Local events can take place during the year leading up to Global MIL Week, or be announced as events that will occur in your country or region around the period of Global MIL Week in November.

New Paradigms for Intercultural Dialogue
This year the theme of Global MIL Week is New Paradigms for Intercultural Dialogue.
Media and Information literacy (MIL) is increasingly important in the global communications environment.
It enables users to understand how traditional and new media can be platforms to promote the values of peace and dialogue. Media institutions themselves can do more to recognize the need to empower audiences with this knowledge.
The role of other intermediaries such as libraries, archive, museums and Internet irrespective of technologies used is also essential for MIL.
As it was emphasized during the Second European MIL Forum<http://www.unesco.org/new/en/communication-and-information/resources/news-and-in-focus-articles/all-news/news/riga_recommendations_highlight_media_and_information_literac/>, Media and Information Literacy is a discipline that enables life. It aligns with developing participatory global citizenship identities that are crucial for developing more humane and democratic societies.
How to celebrate Global MIL Week?
UNESCO is inviting organizations, institutions and individuals to organize a MIL Day in their communities by bringing together diverse actors committed to MIL (NGOS, MIL practitioners, local media, policy makers, students, teachers etc.).
Many local MIL Days or activities will make an echo from the São Paulo conference. Relevant education/training institutions are invited to organize special debates, lectures, or colloquium to promote MIL around the globe.
Communication, information and library science, and education departments can disseminate research findings on themes related to media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue.
Organizations can use social media to raise awareness about MIL in civil society and join the Global Alliance for Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL).
There are many more ways to mark Global MIL Week - take a look at all 10 ways to celebrate HERE<https://en.unesco.org/global-mil-week-2016/10-ways-celebrate>.
The Global MIL Week 2016 is led by UNESCO in cooperation with General Assembly of the Global Alliance for Partnerships in Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), UNAOC and the Media and Information and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) University Network. Global MIL Week will be celebrated from 31 October to 5 November 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil.
