[Geo4All] Ideas invited from "Geo for All" community for Global Week to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO

This is an old story, and I will try raising my concern just once more.
For those who want to see, the story is there, and it is an old story.

Cesium is now managed by AGI. Yes, there is the open source version, but wait, if you want the good stuff, as AGI says:
"Cesium Pro is an upgrade of the open source product that includes specialized features and AGI proprietary rendering techniques."

As AGI says:
"Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) provides commercial software for designing, developing and operating missions within the space and national defense communities."

What possible future can the open source version of Cesium have with Cesium Pro there to offer the higher quality Cesium, which means that 'farm-league' version, Cesium non-Pro, will never be allowed to rise to the level of greatness.

If as Chris says, who has watched WorldWind "struggle with new requirements" maybe that's because we do so much with so little. If you are not struggling, you are not working hard enough! In our case, how about three architecturally aligned versions, Java, Android and HTML5, not to mention iOS. That's quite a load. And also speaks well to the future, given that WorldWind apps running on smart devices will easily be able to move to Android if and when they need more muscle.

World Wind Java has been there for over 10 years. What software can say that!
API-centric modular componentry is tough to architect and build.
But that's what we do and the proof is in the pudding, and that pudding is being carefully applied to Android and HTML5.

And fortunately, these entities want to struggle along with us! The European Space Agency has standardized on Web WorldWind as has Thales Aerospace, and together they have six (6) world class software engineers embedded on the NASA development team. Watch how professionally we navigate new requirements, they are getting batted out of the park right now. https://github.com/NASAWorldWind/WebWorldWind

And if you want to see raw power, the new Explorer 'reference' app free for all (and still struggling ;-), along with a few struggling yet brilliant apps that a small crew of NASA interns are cooking up right now, check this out:
https://github.com/NASAWorldWindResearch

Apps located here:

http://explorer.worldwind.earth/

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/quakehunter/

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/spacebirds/

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/worldweather/

Hope folks might get undistracted enough to see through the commercial nature of the Cesium path. And more than that, maybe help the community-oriented exclusively-non-commercial-open-source WorldWind take on even more requirements.

Suchith,

Sounds good. If small price money is considered useful, perhaps the MapStory Foundation can help that along. Let me know what we can do.

Also, I would love to chat with your colleague and his concerns about MapStory using Cesium. We have made no moves, and haven't written any code, to support our aspirations of a 4D MapStory. Patrick Hogan raised his concerns over Cesium several months ago, and I committed to investigating the issues that might raise concern with the Geo4All community, and our commitment to the Open Principles we have published. Unfortunately, other than some quick initial inquiries, I have been distracted by higher priority issues over the past several months, and have not been able to make more progress.

I will say that after my initial inquiries, I have not yet been able to fully grasp the concerns that Patrick articulated. But, I am happy to learn more. Is it the policy of the Geo4All community to reject open source geo projects that are originated by commercial entities? Or, to reject those that are commercially supported, regardless of who initiated them? Or to reject those with commercial extensions? Or reject those that have been packaged by commercial entities to make it easier for a broader base of users? Or are there particular open source licenses that are frowned upon?

Perhaps I am not properly attuned to such issues, since I have worked very hard for nearly a decade to ensure that open source geo projects are commercially supported by viable commercial entities. My personal motivation in doing this was primarily so that US government customers could include open source geo components in operational systems, which, under policy, demanded commercial support contracts. Without this, the USG uptake of FOSS4G technologies in its various systems was largely limited to R&D and prototype systems. Now, with commercially supported FOSS4G technology, the USG has vastly expanded its use of FOSS4G tech in its production systems.

I have always been a big fan of WorldWind, but I have also watched it struggle with new requirements from the Community. But, I am always interested in learning more.

Thanks!

Chris

Thanks Chris. I dont think it is prize money that is important but more providing opportunity for showing some good examples of spatial literacy etc

btw I just recieved a email query from a colleague who is concerned about that MapStory, is using Cesium, which has their ^new^ 'Pro' version ahead. Is this true? If so, i am also very concerned.
I remember, that i emailed you explictly on this http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/geoforall/2016-February/002636.html and you said you havent made any decision yet and i expected that you will take into full consideration my request . I fully believed your commitment that "We fully intend to have MapStory.org<http://MapStory.org> be free to use for everyone on earth, forever. "

So may i request that you please confirm MapStory's plans with Cesium asap. Geo for All has strong commitment on Open Principles, so we need to make sure we fully understand the long term plans of MapStory . If MapStory (which is a great initiative) is going ahead with plans to build around Cesium , then we will have reconsider our support for MapStory. I hope you can understand my thinking.
It will be really disappointing for us as we were seeing this as a great opportunity to have an open alternative to properitery equivalents and expand geoeducation opportunity more faster. I really hope you will confirm that MapStory will be build fully on Open tools maybe please look for extending additional features for 3D support using current open tools ( World Wind, OpenLayers etc) which can be expanded to replace any planned dependence on Cesium. Will you be open to explore these ideas.

I really hope you and MapStory will be part of Open Principles in geoeducation.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Quick thought? Maybe a MapStory Challenge which might be a good and easy and low learning curve way to get "geoinformation" ideas to the Media and Information Literacy community who might be new to GIS?

Chris, Jon - any ideas/suggestions for this?

Subject: [Geo4All] Ideas invited from "Geo for All" community for Global Week to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO

Dear colleagues,

I have been informed by Professor Karl Donert (President, EUROGEO) of this excellent opportunity. Details below.

It is a good opportunity to involve "Geo for All" community in the Global Week to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO. I think it is a great idea to join synergies for raising the profile of "geo" through "geo-media" and "geoinformation" in the Media and Information Literacy community.

I also see that the feature event for Global MIL Week is at Sao Paulo Brazil from November 2nd - 5th 2016. We should make use of our Brazil network to have a strong presence at this also. Details at https://en.unesco.org/global-mil-week-2016

So may i request your ideas and volunteers to lead planning for this to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO?

Best wishes,

Suchith

Hi Suchith

Saw this (below) and thought it could be of interest. As part of its advocacy work, EUROGEO has been (somewhat peripherally) involved in this group, trying to raise the profile of "geo" through "geo-media" and "geoinformation" in the MIL (Media and Information Literacy) community.

It would seem to me that this could be quite a nice opportunity we should maybe try to take advantage of.

How about activating the "Geo for All" community in this Global Week to help demonstrate and raise awareness of "geo" in education at UNESCO? We could encourage some common "Geoforall" event names and hashtags for instance and promote through newsletters and Web sites?

Let me know what you think ?

Best Wishes

Karl

Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2016: Celebrate with us and register your events
Going towards 5th Global MIL Week, UNESCO is calling all stakeholders to join the celebration of Media and Information Literacy through organization of events or initiatives in their community, region or online. Celebrate with us!
This Global Call is open across the world, building up to the Global MIL Week celebrations that will take place from 31 October to 5 November. The feature event for Global MIL Week be held in Sao Paulo Brazil from November 2nd - 5th 2016. Local events can take place during the year leading up to Global MIL Week, or be announced as events that will occur in your country or region around the period of Global MIL Week in November.

New Paradigms for Intercultural Dialogue
This year the theme of Global MIL Week is New Paradigms for Intercultural Dialogue.
Media and Information literacy (MIL) is increasingly important in the global communications environment.
It enables users to understand how traditional and new media can be platforms to promote the values of peace and dialogue. Media institutions themselves can do more to recognize the need to empower audiences with this knowledge.
The role of other intermediaries such as libraries, archive, museums and Internet irrespective of technologies used is also essential for MIL.
As it was emphasized during the Second European MIL Forum<http://www.unesco.org/new/en/communication-and-information/resources/news-and-in-focus-articles/all-news/news/riga_recommendations_highlight_media_and_information_literac/>, Media and Information Literacy is a discipline that enables life. It aligns with developing participatory global citizenship identities that are crucial for developing more humane and democratic societies.
How to celebrate Global MIL Week?
UNESCO is inviting organizations, institutions and individuals to organize a MIL Day in their communities by bringing together diverse actors committed to MIL (NGOS, MIL practitioners, local media, policy makers, students, teachers etc.).
Many local MIL Days or activities will make an echo from the São Paulo conference. Relevant education/training institutions are invited to organize special debates, lectures, or colloquium to promote MIL around the globe.
Communication, information and library science, and education departments can disseminate research findings on themes related to media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue.
Organizations can use social media to raise awareness about MIL in civil society and join the Global Alliance for Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL).
There are many more ways to mark Global MIL Week - take a look at all 10 ways to celebrate HERE<https://en.unesco.org/global-mil-week-2016/10-ways-celebrate>.
The Global MIL Week 2016 is led by UNESCO in cooperation with General Assembly of the Global Alliance for Partnerships in Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), UNAOC and the Media and Information and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) University Network. Global MIL Week will be celebrated from 31 October to 5 November 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil.
