Thank you Victoria for this information. Great to see this initiative for students and thanks to you and all mentors who are helping making this possible. It is up to you and other mentors in this initiative to decide the tasks for the students. In my humble opinion, it might be good to think of a short literature review task for students on “The State of Open Education in Geospatial Science and How can I contribute?” to help them understand the importance of Open Educational resources . It can be a short literature review looking at existing Open Education initiatives and preparing a short summary report/tutorial/blogpost/video as appropriate.

If it is a short report from the students then we can also have it published in the GeoForAll newsletters if Nikos thinks it is good idea. The students can look at example ideas on the use of GIS in various domains (from biodiversity to town planning) to help with this task. For example, The lesson scenarios at GIS at School might be a good starting point http://edugis.pl/en/for-teachers/guide Maybe Ela and other colleagues in UNEP-Warsaw who developed the GIS at School will have more ideas on this.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear Suchith

I am involved as a mentor with the Google Code-in and actually virtually met Ethan about a week or so ago when he worked on a QGIS task.

For the Google Code-in, the organization (OSGeo) and mentors create a number of tasks, which the students can then complete, for example, download the GRASS source code and compile it, or designing a logo for pgRouting. The students then spend 3-5 hours completing the task and get rated on how they complete the task and might win a number of prizes (https://codein.withgoogle.com). GCI admin, please add if I miss something.

There is currently not any tasks associated with GeoForAll, but we can still add any tasks. If any specific tasks from the GeoForAll community, we can add it and I will be happy to assist with the "mentoring". I will see if I can formulate a task or two based on your previous email.

Regards
Victoria

Thank you for your mail . GeoForAll is open to all not just universities. We are very grateful for you kindly volunteering to help GeoForAll by spreading the use of geospatial technology to everyone. Every single volunteer for GeoForAll is our GeoAmbassodors. You are welcome to share GeoForAll ideas and resources to your parents, teachers , youth and welcome everyone to join. Please share the free and open Geo resources that we have at http://www.geoforall.org/training/ to the wider community.

Some of the teaching resources created by GeoAcademy might be of interest. All details and courses at http://spatialquerylab.com/foss4g-academy-curriculum/

Please also inform your teachers and youth for joining the next year’s NASA Europa challenge http://eurochallenge.como.polimi.it This year's GODAN Local Farming challenge was won by a team of High school students from USA who developed AgroSphere . Hello Everyone!

My name is Ethan Zhao and I am in 10th grade in the US (Texas). I'm participating in this year's Google Code-In, and I was doing tasks for OSGeo when I noticed Geo for All. I was instantly hooked by Geo for All's mission statement and motto. It perfectly combined my interests in geospatial technology and education of youth. Thus, I'd like to help contribute to Geo for All in spreading the use of geospatial technology to everyone.

I was told that Geo for All mainly operates at a university level, so I'm not sure if I would fit the requirements posted on the website. Could I jump in and help do anything that needs to be done? For example, while I may not have as much experience with the remote sensing or QGIS yet, I could work on any programs needed for outreach, education, etc. or just spread the word about Geo for All.

If you would like to learn more about me, my wiki page is at https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Exyzhao.

Thanks for your time!
Ethan Zhao
