Dear all,
Students are the present and the future , so it is important that we acknowledge their work and contributions. Last year, we started on the OSGeo student awards . That time, we did not have any detailed action plan of what exactly to do for the student awards (though we did provide some framework ideas) but thanks to amazing colleagues we are able to arrange some excellent competitions in collaboration with various initiatives like the Geospatial Skills Competition in USA , Sergio’s conference in Uruguay, Worldwind Challenge 2018 , FOSS4G 2018
With OSGeo signing MoU with YouthMappers, we have more opportunities now to reach out to the student community.
Some of the lessons that was learnt from the student competitions this year are
1. Trust fully the Local organisers and give them the full flexibility to arrange the competition as they wish.
2. OSGeo provide 500 USD to each competition. It is fully upto the local organisers to decide how to divide this (one prize, 3 prize ,10 prize etc).
3. The Local organisers need to share the summary with winner details with the GeoforAll community and a blog post for our website, newsletters etc
4. It is learning process for the Local organisers also, so they might make some mistakes. Allow them opportunity to learn and improve in the future
If any other ideas/suggestions for the Student competitions, please share. Following the request from Thomas Muller on building up this competition for next year Geospatial Skills Competition 2019, and our success with this year’s events I request GeoForAll AB to request more budget for student awards in the future years from OSGeo. I suggest that we request for 4000 USD for student awards in 2019/20 , so we can accommodate 8 events next year (500 USD per event) . Please let us know any ideas/suggestions/objections by Sep 15th 2018 (I understand many are on holidays, so it is important that we give more time for discussions on this).
Best wishes,
Suchith
