I’ve edited this description to bring it more in line with the style of other session descriptions. I’ve also elaborated on it somewhat, in particular by making reference to the UN principles referenced in the proposed title (again, mildly edited). Let me know if this has ended up too far afield from the original intention.

AAG 2019 Panel
Enabling the Right to Benefit from Geospatial Scientific Progress and Its Applications
Andy Anderson (Amherst, USA), Suchith Anand (University of Nottingham, UK)
Geographic Information Science and Technology are important contributors to the advancement of human knowledge, as well to solving many societal challenges. Through there have been huge advances in GIST over the last few decades, the benefits of geospatial education and entrepreneurship opportunities are very limited for economically poor students and communities, due to the expense of the technology. However, the last decade has seen a rapid growth in free and open-source geospatial software along with the development of many open-data resources, based in open standards. Together with open educational resources and open access to research publications, these Open Principles in Geospatial Education have significantly lowered the barrier to the use of GIST by the broader public.
Disseminating these advances is in keeping with the Right to Benefit from Scientific Progress and Its Applications promoted by the United Nations [1], which “includes (a) access by everyone without discrimination to the benefits of science and its application, including scientific knowledge; (b) opportunities for all to contribute to the scientific enterprise and freedom indispensable for scientific research; (c) participation of individuals and communities in decision-making and the related right to information; and (d) an enabling environment fostering the conservation, development and diffusion of science and technology.”
How do we enable access to geoeducational opportunities for all? How can we help everyone enjoy the benefits of geospatial scientific progress and its applications? How can we create a global community of practitioners committed to advancing open principles in geospatial education? This panel will bring together key educators and thinkers to discuss these ideas and possibilities.
The panel is proposed by the GeoForAll community [2] and is in association with YouthMappers, which will be organizing a community mapathon adjacent to the conference.

Do we have a second co-chair yet? We need to move forward on this, most sessions have submissions deadlines between October 19 (past) and October 31, so we’re already late in getting out a call for proposals.

Hi Andy,
Thank you. That is excellent.
You are right, we have till Nov 8th to finalize ideas for this. We just need on more cochair willing to help organise this panel session to inform us if possible by 22nd Monday so we can start work on this.
I understand YouthMappers are planning the mapathon outside the main AAG conference venue (Patricia - did I understand this correctly ?) . If so, we have bit more time to finalise the panelists etc.
Best wishes,
Suchith

Looks like I’ll be going to AAG, and I’m willing to co-chair.
October 22 is a Monday, by the way. Looks like we have until November 8 to pull this together in its entirety:

Subject: AAG synergies and collaboration- telemeeting followup
Thank you to Patricia, Marcella, Tom, Phillip who were able to join our telemeeting. . I hope I correctly summarised the main points from the discussions below . Please correct/edit/modify as needed.
1. We discussed ideas for supporting YouthMappers hackathon at AAG 2019. Patricia, Marcella are involved in organising this. We can support them by helping organise a panel session (just before the hackathon) bring key panelists.
Action - Suchith to prepare a draft abstract for the proposed panel session and send it to GeoForAll list with request that any two volunteers who are planning to be at AAG 2019 act as co-chairs for the session. We can then submit this by Oct 24th?
2. We discussed the importance of having strong presence for OSGeo at AAG 2019. Once idea was to have OSGeo Live USBs handed out to all AAG participants, students etc . This will be a great way to reach out to the participants as well as serve a great value to the participants.
There will costs but doable if we are able to find an organisation to sponsor the OSGeo Live USBs ? Guido- it will be great to have your ideas for this. The sponsor can put their logo in the USB? All ideas welcome.
Patricia - please add any other points I missed? Thanks.
Best wishes,
Suchith
