Subject: Paolo Tarolli candidacy President EGU Natural Hazards Division -
election November 2021
To:

Dear colleagues,
I hereby inform you that I have accepted to run for the *Presidency of the
Natural Hazards Division* of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in the
elections that are currently open for all 2021 EGU member votes until 30
November 2021. Each 2021 EGU member (regular, student, emeritus or
complimentary membership) will receive (or just received it) an email (with
a personalized link) to vote for the open vacancy/vacancies once the
election has started (*note that, in addition to the EGU President and
General Secretary, you can vote f**or a maximum of three votes for three
Division President vacancies*). Information on the elections and candidates
is provided on the web page
https://www.egu.eu/elections/egu-election-autumn-2021/candidates/ (please
check details).

My candidacy was born by the unparalleled vibrating experience I had in the
last few years serving the NH division and participating in EGU
initiatives. I contributed to developing and promoting the NH division
along the following lines: Science Officer of the new sub-division NH6 -
Remote Sensing & Hazards from 2015 to 2019, Deputy President of NH since
2019, co-editor of the division’s social media channels, active
participation in Early Career Scientists initiatives (e.g., the recent
webinar on “how to write a scientific article”), enhancing networking
between East Asia and Europe. Therefore, it is now the right time to offer
my service and experience to the NH community and promote further the
knowledge on the environmental challenges of our time.

EGU Natural Hazards division is highly interdisciplinary, characterized by
an articulated intertwinement between physical and social sciences. It
involves an active group of early-career scientists (NhET). This structure
needs to be preserved, improving the interaction with international
organizations, policymakers and practitioners. For this reason, I am firmly
convinced that the future President should have a multidisciplinary
background to construct fruitful collaborations among scientists of
different disciplines and cultures and communicate effectively with
stakeholders to deal with the emerging challenges of natural hazards of
this century. Likewise, the President should demonstrate flexibility and a
vision to boost and maintain the work with early-career scientists, who are
the division's future, sharing their enthusiasm and seeking innovative
engagement activities through proper communication channels.

The goal is ambitious; however it goes, I will certainly continue my
voluntary activity with any form of collaboration that the scientific
community will feel appropriate.

You can find a short CV/statement with which my application is presented in
the vote-link you will receive (where also other candidates are presented).
If you agree and think that my person is appropriate to represent the
international NH community, I hope to count on your support and that you
will consider the opportunity to disseminate my candidacy to potentially
interested networks and/or your circles.

Available for any further information, do not hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes
Paolo Tarolli
