[Geo4All] [OSGeo-Discuss] The International Day of Non-Violence (Kavita Mitkari)

This sort-of-spicy conversation caught my attention. I usually don’t love
off-topic posts, so I wondered, is it really off topic, and if so, how much?

I’m a computational scientist. A domain scientist uses GIS to study their
field, and I help domain scientists with things like coding and use of GIS
software applications. In order to do that effectively, I have to have (or
gain) basic knowledge of their field. I looked at Suchith’s links in the
signature, and it does look like this is very relevant to his domain
science.

In XSEDE ECSS (consulting wing of the previous contract for NSF computing
resources) there was something they called ‘NIP’, or ‘Novel and Innovative
Projects’. That means people using advanced computing for nontraditional
fields. It was very useful to have an awareness of these fields, so I can
provide better support, and also look for ways for outreach and inclusion
of nontraditional HPC users.

A quick Google search turned up a ton of religion and violence related GIS
applications. Here is a short list:

GIS and the geography of religion
https://www.gislounge.com/gis-geography-religion/

Tracking racial violence
https://library.wustl.edu/news/faculty-project-uses-gis-to-explore-history-of-racial-violence/

Mapping violence against indigenous women and girls
https://acme-journal.org/index.php/acme/article/view/1962

Incidence of violence risk tracking in Pakistan

For any type of organization or service provider, I think it is helpful to
know who is using your products/services, and even more helpful to know who
*isn’t* using your products/services so you can go out and try to include
them.

I guess if I sent out something about exciting new NASA ocean color
products, it might not be obvious why it could be relevant to the group.
Or maybe it is not relevant, I don’t know. But NASA is having lots of
grant opportunities to incorporate that satellite data into GIS
products…seems like something everyone would like to know, right?!?

Science aside, I do like learning about ‘International Day of…[anything]’,
especially something established by the UN. In Cary, North Carolina, our
unique cultural contribution to the world is the Pimento Cheese Festival:

Cheers,
Lisa
