Dear colleagues,

The launch of the Ethical Data Initiative<https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/> (EDI) marks a significant milestone in the realm of data ethics and governance. In today’s digital age, data plays a pivotal role in shaping our decisions and experiences, often without our explicit knowledge. From the rise in IoT and AI technologies to navigating online platforms, data tracks and influences our interactions in myriad ways. The increasing reliance on data brings to light a host of ethical considerations, ranging from personal privacy to global data governance.

This initiative was launched as a collaborative effort between the University of Exeter and the Technical University of Munich. With a clear mission in mind, the EDI seeks to tackle significant issues such as data literacy, transparency, and trust-building within data ecosystems. By fostering open dialogue and collaboration, the initiative sets out to shape ethical data practices and pave the way for a more transparent and trustworthy data landscape.

The recent EDI Kick-Off workshop at the TUM Think Tank in Munich served as a platform to underscore the urgency of collaborative action in shaping ethical data practices. Key takeaways from the workshop emphasised the importance of inclusive participation from diverse sectors and communities, as well as the need for holistic approaches and interdisciplinary dialogue. As we venture further into the data-driven era, the launch of the Ethical Data Initiative signifies a pivotal step towards fostering responsible and ethical data practices. By bringing together experts, stakeholders, and communities, the initiative is poised to drive meaningful change and set new standards for ethical data governance.
