This presentation will review the experiences over the past six years of instructing a FOSS4G course at the university level. What has worked and what needs to be improved will be discussed. These experiences
are based on an introductory FOSS4G course that focuses on how students can incorporate Open Source technologies into their program majors and careers. While the specific content for each semester changes there are three core areas of FOSS4G technology that
the students use: desktop GIS, database management systems, and Cloud-based GIS. The students gain experience with these technologies through readings and hands-on exercises. This gives them the experience to use FOSS4G in a project of their choice that
is related to their major course of study. An important part of this course is the guest speakers. Each semester, several individuals give presentations on how they are using FOSS4G in their work. This provides real-world examples of how FOSS4G can be applied
to solve business, environmental, and social problems.
