For those interested the "Roll your own" approach, I ran across
uMap (https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/) an Open Source project
with feature editing and saving. There was a note on using
https://github.com/umap-project/Leaflet.Storage. I haven't located
the protocol doc yet (if any exists) but I did monitor the client /server
conversation while creating features on their demo site. Looks
fairly straightforward.
