[Geomoose-users] User id

All, 

I've been in conversations exploring the idea of a chat window inside of GeoMoose as well.  Things like being able to pass view characteristics, and such to another user, things like that.  Our preferred protocol would be to use JABBER.  We've used it quite a bit in the past for different (but similar) things.  The ability to log a session in Jabber as well as set up secure groups is another plus, and allows for some interesting ways to post information about a particular GeoMoose view, etc, to a wider audience, without complicating the geomoose code too extensively. 

No way around there being a need for some sort of server component for this though.  How would others envision something like this being implemented?   Seems like a plausible user extension. 

I have access to a Jabber service for trying some things out if anyone else is game?

  I'd be interested in that.  I expect we'll have a need to do some collaboration between two or three users on our mapping site, so that might be a start.  I had also considered having a tab for a "chat" window (which implies a a chat server, etc)...

We have a "bookmark" tool which allows users to save basic settings such as the last selected set, mapextent and which layers are turned off or on.  The bookmark is printed in the results tab and can be used as a book mark, e-mailed, etc. We use this to support different groups or individuals within the county so that their default views are saved and accessible. Carl,

On way is to save it as a session variable in your server-side scripting.  However if your existing site (where they log in) and your new mapping site are on different servers, you'll need to do something else.

My users will access the app from a site that already exists and will do so once logged in, I can pass across a user id on the url (as part of the query string) or as a form variable. The users will then make whatever changes to the map they need (turning layers on and off) and save those changes, I plan to do this by saving into a database and along with the map layer information I would need to save the user id from the url so I can pair up users with their saved map details later on when they are back in the main site. 



Is there a recognised way to do this in geomoose or does anyone have any suggestions.
