me too I've experienced the same error with styles setted in Geoserver<br>
after I ran genode updatalyers as root and not www-data user. That<br>
time i think the error was 403. Couple of 500 error based on wrong<br>
SITEURL or hostname anywhere, last time found it in local_settings.pyc<br>
inside /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/geonode dir..<br>

If anyone needs to know, in a test envirnoment I've also temporary<br>
disabled certificate validation in<br>
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/geoserver/catalog.py (74)<br>
