Well for that case I agree it's helpful.  I thought I understood that
the magic would also be for things other than layer objects ?

So we would have another object like we have the workspace object to use
with the workspace driver ?  Which means the "old" way of doing things
woudl still be supported with the old driver.  Makes me think about my
suggested mods to the workspace ...

A mixture between a simpler xml and a certain degree of predefined
behaviour (a.k.a. automatism) would lead to an easier user experience.
But simplifying/moduralizing the xml will lead to a new driver anyways
so some degree of automatism can be applied then.  Just don't know when
it's best to do that when users want to print and position vertices at
exact coordinates and filter data for different user roles and ...
