 Correction to the above. It looks like this may never have been "working
 fine earlier"; the C++ runtime library comment was likely me chasing a red
 herring.

 I can reproduce this consistently on this platform (Amazon Linux/CentOS),
 and never on my other platform of choice (Mac OS X).
