 Wait, I wasn't running your actual SQL. Please test *my* SQL on your
 setup, just to confirm that a "normal" union runs in OK time. Your SQL
 does a bunch of grouping, and I need to examine it a little to see what it
 is actually doing, in terms of which groups are taking all the time, and
 what they look like.
