JavaDB (or Derby) 10.5.1.1 can keep a database in-memory without disk access, which is convenient for test suites creating and destroying small databases. However this version is not yet deployed on Maven repository for the raisons exposed there:

This issue is for remembering us to upgrate to JavaDB 10.5.1.1 when we can. In-Memory databases are presented there:
