labeling contour lines in GRASS

The r.contour utility is a nice addition.  But can anyone suggest how best
to go the next step?

We'd like to have some reasonable form of automated labeling for the contour
lines generated by r.contour.  This is necessary for almost all contours we
would create.  Does GRASS have the flexibility to do this, or should we plan
to export the vector file and process with other software?
