tables in programming manual

Is it just my printer or are all of the tables in others' programming
manuals sort of messed up? By "messed up," I mean horizontal lines
don't line up with vertical ones, fonts look a little big (causing
entries to print outside of boundaries), entries don't line up in
columns, etc. This effects a large part of it, especially the
appendices/indices. Has this been fixed in a later postscript version
(I got mine a few months ago)?
