Help with peripheral selection

I'm a new GRASS user with GRASS4.0 running on a Sun SPARC10.  I'd like to 
be able to scan in a map, and use it as a base layer on which to overlay
digitized data and data from other sources, registering all layers using 
lat-long.  Can anyone help with hardware configuration, or vendor suggestions
??  Also, I'd like to be able to play through several of the above-type 
images in time sequence - like a movie.  Any ideas about appropriate packages?
