Chuck,
You can set the following variables in your .grassrc file:

XDRIVER_HEIGHT: 800
XDRIVER_WIDTH: 500
XDRIVER_LEFT: 0
XDRIVER_TOP: 0

Use appropriate values, in pixels, as desired. Beware, GRASS display commands
seem to work alright (d.rast, d.vect, etc.), but the display *query* commands
(d.what...) and d.zoom don't like the GRASS monitor being bigger than your
window!!
