PROJ 4.3.0 & PROJ patches & GRASS

Hi,
   The copy of GRASS 4.1 I have is using a version of proj dating from 1992. I
recently down loaded another proj package (from moon.incomming). the README
says it contains two patches dating May 1994.  Does anyone know what these
patches fix?

Also, the package comes with a Gmakefile & instructions for linking it to
GRASS.  Is it worth updating GRASS? Has anyone tried this?
