Please help - "v.in.dxf" does not work :(

Hello,
        I am trying to import some "dxf" data into GRASS (or
I am looking for *any* type of data that can be  
successfully imported into GRASS).

        When I typed "v.in.dxf lakes.dxf", I got the following
message:

"end of file reached while looking for HEADER"

The dlg and dlg_att files were never created. What exactly is
the problem? Please forgive my frustration. It appears that
I have just about tried every format for inporting data into 
GRASS with little or no success. Any help or hints would
be appreciated :)
