v.plant

Hello GRASS-Users !
I have to split a line representing a river into pieces of 
equal length. The module v.plant is said to do this task.
When starting this shell-script (v.plant.sh) it exports
the binary vector file in ascii-format splits the line and reimports
it into binary format. But there's nothing in the resultant file, no
lines no sites no polygons. What happened ?
Did the export in ascii-format produce an empty file ?

Any help is welcome !
