Hi: I think I found out the problem with the r.mapcalc - I think it is a
bug in r.mapcalc.
Here is my report.

r.mapcalc does not like it if the cellvalues are very high for eg.,
initially I put the col=fips
which ranges from 1001 to 55141 - it core dumped ... I guess the limit in
r.mapcalc is 32xxx which is a "huge" limitation. So, I changed to col=ppt
which ranges from 413 to 1853 ...and had no problems with r.mapcalc.
I hope this limitation is removed in the grass5 official release.

GRASS 5.0beta8 > d.rast.pg key=FIPS tab=curr_pred col=ppt lab=avgt in=fips
out=navgt
GRASS 5.0beta8 > r.mapcalc avgtf=@navgt

EXECUTING avgtnf = ... 100%
CREATING SUPPORT FILES FOR avgtnf
range: 1.9600000381 22.3400001526

Again, I'd like to thank you Alex for your support - that really enhances
the wonderful database functionality you have introduced to Grass. I hope
to be able to contribute my model-chooser with Tcl/Tk - R-statistical and
Grass GIS software to the public in the near future....in the meanwhile, I
hope I can continue to seek your support.
Best regards,
Prasad
