Thanks for looking into this. From checking

cvs log -d '>2001-08-09 00:00' 

I receive the log. While looking at it, there are some 2-part versions
found, but they are immediately followed by a 3-part versions. This should
be o.k., see example below:

revision 1.1
date: 2001/08/23 12:28:23;  author: markus;  state: dead;
branches:  1.1.2;
file README.tcl was initially added on branch
releasebranch_11_april_2001_5_0_0.
----------------------------
revision 1.1.2.1
date: 2001/08/23 12:28:23;  author: markus;  state: Exp;  lines: +5 -0
added urls

So far I cannot detect any problem (I am still no specialist).
If anyone wants to look as well, the file is here:
