sh grass5install.sh grass5.0.0pre1_i686-pc-linux-gnu_bin.tar.gz

resulted in

failure to create /usr/local/grass5/etc/monitorcap

asks me if I am root user

if I create the monitorcap directory myself, the install program omits it,
asks me if I am root user

of course I am logged on as root
