I think the discussion is turning in circles a bit. Maybe by focussing on the different seperate issues, we can advance:

1) Grass is not very intuitive in its structure and so newbies find it difficult. One main difficulty is the lack of documentation. This is currently being worked on, I will begin revising the turorial within the next few days, once life outside Grass leaves me some time. There is an enthousiastic (albeit also limited) team ready to work on this, but any more help is welcome. One of the first steps should probably be a FAQ. Feedback from Baylor might help in this.

2) The region is a difficult concept in Grass. It is very helpful for a lot of the analysis work, but not very easy to grasp at the beginning. So, we should think about whether it would be feasible to implement some default region creation at start-up and some "region checking and warning" in some of the standard modules.

3) Should Grass implement "reasonable defaults" ? This means that we have to identify these defaults and see whether and where it makes sense to implement them.

All these are important questions and we should be grateful to Russell for raising them this forcefully. Maybe we won't be able to implement them for Grass5.0, but thinking about them for Grass5.1 is definitely worth it.
