I won't be able to work on the press release in the next days.
Somebody else has to pick it up.

DRAFT _NOT_ _FOR_ _DISTRIBUTION_

	First stable GRASS 5 release.

Today the GRASS Development team under leadership of Markus Neteler
released the first stable version of the fifth generation of
the famous Free Software Geographic Information System.
The sources of the new 5.0.0 version and further information
can be found on grass.itc.it and several mirrors.

GRASS 5 compared to GRASS 4 represents the first major change
in GRASS functionality in several years, with the most notable
change being support for floating point and null values. GRASS 5 also
has a new and much easier to use windows interface based on Tcl/Tk.
Several beta and pre release of GRASS 5 have been available in the past.
Developers believe that 5.0.0 has proven itself stable enough to
justify a wide audience release.

"This release was long in coming, because the GRASS source code base
is huge.", explains the team coordinator Markus Neteler,
"In the last years GRASS also completely changed the development model
adopting an open volunteer driven process and fully going the
Free Software way."

"This is a milestone release", reveals Professor Helena Mitasova from the
North Carolina State University, "Markus Neteler has successfully coordinated
many developers to undertake this huge endevour." Professor Mitasova
views the new GRASS 5.0 as a geospatial research environment which provides
solid core functionality and encourages experiments and innovation.
