5.1/7.1? Not yet. Missing are still category index (for fast search
in features by category) and feature index (for SF formats (shapefile, OGR)
mapping grass offset to feature id (or probably path to feature in tree
for geometry collection) and part number). Both must be stored in file,
it means a change of the format (but only that part that may be rebuild by v.build).
I think that 5.1/7.1 should not be released until we believe that
the format is stable.

Dear win-grass users.

I am starting in this software and I am trying to run it in windows. I have
installed the software without problems according to instructions indicated
in
http://grass.baylor.edu//grass5/binary/windows_cygnus/cygwin_grass50bininstall.html.

I have started grass on cygwin and the program starts without problems
using the XFree86 desktop mode. Nevertheles, when I want to start the
graphical user interface writing tcltkgrass, a error command line appear
indicating exec: wish: not found.

Does anyone know what can be the problem?.

Many thanks

Dear All,

With a little over a month left for the deadline for submission
of abstracts (30 April, 2004), I would like to remind the
subscribers of this list to kindly submit their abstracts
through the conference web-page
(http://gisws.media.osaka-cu.ac.jp/grass04/).

The conference is scheduled to be held at Chulalongkorn University,
Bangkok, Thailand from 12-14 September 2004. Details are
available on the conference web-site. Looking forward
to seeing many GRASS users and developers at the conference
and hoping that the conference would be a big success. Would also
like to request you all to pass on the info about the upcoming
conference thru appropriate channels/forum that may be accessible

Hi,
As a newbie I'm trying to find my way through the install and first run =
of Grass5. I have arrived at the prompt 'tcltkgrass&' and this generates =
a start-up script error. Could someone tell me how to get the graphical =
user interface working? I am running an up-to-date XP Pro box, and I've =
downloaded all the
components of Cygwin. The version of GRASS I've installed is 5.0.3 i686
cygwin. The error message is generated after grass5 seems to load OK =
then I
type in . tcltkgrass5. The "Error in startup script" box then pops up =
with
"/usr/XIIR6/bin/xwininfo: unable to open display".

Hope this makes sense to you.

Many thanks for your time.
Mike

Hi,
I have written the following batch (grass5start.bat) file to run Grass5 =
inside Cygwin on an XP Pro box:

echo off
echo.
echo This batch program
echo starts GRASS5.
echo written by Mike Francis.
echo.
echo off
:begin
set export DISPLAY=3D127.0.0.1:0
XWin -multiwindow -clipboard &
start C:\cygwin\user\local\bin\grass5
set d.mon x0
start c:\cygwin\user\local\bin\tcltkgrass &

However, my paltry knowledge of batch files has let me down - it stalls =
at 'start ... grass5'

I wonder if anyone can help out with some advice?

Many thanks,
Mike

It's not clear to me what/why you are trying to do here. As I understand
it you should start GRASS from the Cygwin bash shell. Is there a good
reason for not doing that? Something like
c:\cygwin\bin\bash -c /usr/local/bin/grass53
might work from the Windows command prompt (or a batch file) but I'm not
sure; maybe you could elaborate on why you need it to be a Windows batch
file and not a Cygwin shell script (if, say you want to do something like
set the DISPLAY variable before starting GRASS)

What do you mean by "startup file/s"? The session file (which contains
the current database, location and mapset) is $HOME/.grassrc5. The
script which is used to start a GRASS session is usually
/usr/local/bin/grass5 (or grass53/grass57 for the development
versions).

Dear all,

I am a new user of wingrass and therefore I am quite unfamiliar with =
this software. I have realised that I get lot of problems running grass =
from my laptop whereas none from other pcs. I wonder why. The first =
problem is in using r.in.gdal to import data from arc to grass. It =
apparently works properly but at the end there is no map imported that =
can be visualised. The same occurs using r.in.arc or r.in.ascii. I have =
tried to import data from another computer and then transfer those files =
to my lap top. But when transferring the files they get corrupted and =
the following message is shown: "warning error reading compressed map =
... in mapset [permanent] row 2222". This happens with all the files I =
have transferred although they display properly in the other pcs. I have =
reinstalled grass several times but it doesn=B4t seem to work out.
Could there be any incompatibility with windows XP? I would appreciate =
any comment that could help to sort out this problem.=20
Thanks in advance,=20

Hi,

I am developing a navigation system for the blind. A particular problem =
I need to overcome is to determine the exact bearing a user is facing. =
For example, a person with normal sight knows which direction s/he is =
facing because they are able to use 'line-of-sight' to landmarks. =
However, a blind person, cannot use line-of-sight and s/he have no idea =
in which direction they are facing. Now, a usual navigation system can =
plot the shortest path and offer directions from an origin to a =
destination. However, until we are able to determine the direction faced =
by a user we cannot offer navigation instructions. I was wondering if =
anyone has any ideas how I can use GRASS and a GPS attached to a PDA to =
determine this 'micro-bearing' data?

Thanks for your help.
Mike

Hi all,

I just installed Cygwin on W2k. Now I wanted to
install GRASS-GIS Software and got the following
message: "You may need login as root for
installation."

I am able to Install Software on W2k. So I should have
this right also withhin Cygwin, or not? I tried to
login as root, but of course I don't have the correct
password. But also our W2k-Admin could'nt login as
root nor as admin. (we use domain logons)

su- said: user root does not exsist

What can I do? Can I create "my own" user root?

CU,
Jo

I am having trouble getting grass running, and am wondering if anyone can
help. when I try to run tcltkgrass& I get a windows error message for
wish8.3.exe that says This application has failed to start because
cygwinb19.dll was not found.

I had grass 5, 5.3 and 5.7 running on cygwin, and I was having toruble
getting VIS5D running. When I got that working, I found that GRASS no
longer worked. I have tried removing Cygwin several times, and reinstalling
it and grass, but I keep getting the same error. From my understanding,
cygwinb19.dll is outdated anyway. I am notr sure how to get around this, as
I am not very experienced with Linux/Unix.

Any ideas?

Hi, i'm a beginner to GRASS. I'm using grass 5.7 on cygwin and i'm trying
to import a USGS dems using r.in.gdal but I'm running into problems. When I
select the file to import, I receive an error message that the *.DDF format
is not recognizsed as a suported file format.

I've tried reinstalling grass57 but still get the same error message. Can
anyone shed some light on this problem? Thanks.

I will be very much grateful to you if you kindly help me out of this problem so that i can continue with GRASS 5.7.0.

A real newbie here.... trying to get started for the first time on Grass so I can play with shape files.. am trying to install Grass 5.7 using "Installing Grass 5.7 on Win32 with Cygwin" instructions (dated 2004/03/29) onto Windows XP.

I did the "Cygwin installation" including selected packages via Cygwin mirror site and
downloaded xtclk-8.3.4-CYGWIN.tar.gz
Tried to enter the following into the cygwin shell window as per instructions but nothing happens except the following error message....

bash-2.05b$ tar xvfz xtcltk-8.3.4-CYGWIN.tar.gz
bash: tar: command not found

Something simple is wrong but cant figure it out. Have checked that I have tar.exe in /bin folder Ok.

Any clues as to what I have missed? or is it a grass5.7 thing.

Phil

Dear sir,
I am a student of M.Tech.(Civil Engineering) at Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Guwahati, India. I have just completed the GRASS 5.7 installaton over Windows XP OS.I have installed the following binaries:

1) xtcltk-8.3.4-CYGWIN.tar.gz
2) cyggdal-1.dll.tar.gz
3) grass-5.7.0-i686-pc-cygwin-24_06_2004-install.sh
4) grass-5.7.0-i686-pc-cygwin-24_06_2004.tar.gz
But still after the successful installation, it is showing some error messages while i am choosing some options of the GUI windows.Like, in the "ERDAS LAN" option, it is showing that 'the file i.in.erdas not found'.In some of the other options also(database register options and some others) these problems are arising.I am unable to find out why those files are missing and if so, from where i can get those required files and how to install those files. If you please help me out to get rid of these difficulties i will be very much grateful to you.
Yours faithfully,
