Subject: Installation of PNG driver

Platform: GNU/Linux/i386
grass obtained from: Trento Italy site
grass binary for platform: Downloaded precompiled Binaries
GRASS Version: 5.0.3

After starting grass5 
At the grass prompt I proceed and following error occurs:
GRASS:~ > cd $GISBASE
bash: spearfish: No such file or directory
GRASS:/usr/local/grass5 > cd $GISBASE
bash: spearfish: No such file or directory
GRASS:/usr/local/grass5 >
Kindly tell me what is GISBASE? and how to install this Png diver?
My PNG driver Zip file is in /usr/grass5
Sampled data Spearfish is in /usr/grassdata 
What is GD Library GD library >= V2.0
