I don't know enough about it to say. I think the different Unix versions 
must have different versions of the man command derived from BSD, System V 
etc. with slightly different behaviours. But not having a pre-formatted 
version is not important---it only results in a fraction of a second delay 
in the man page loading. Having a pre-formatted version that was wrong 
(e.g. an empty file or just an error message) meant the man pages couldn't 
be displayed at all and was more serious. But I think that's fixed now.
