[GRASS5] Collecting GPS info (lat/lon) for streetmaps

Greetings All

I would like to know "how I could" or more importantly
"if I could" use GRASS to collect GPS info for street
maps.
I am in South America & there is no street map on
general sales that contains lat/lon grids.
