perhaps look at it this way:

Binary packagers (e.g. on Mac where it is known to break), can apply
whatever patches within the GPL they feel makes for a better package.
[but please make a note somewhere and keep a diff handy]

The "official" CVS source shouldn't deal with bugs by sweeping them
under the carpet, otherwise they never get fixed.

This way general users get a working program and advanced users are
forced to notice it.
