..valgrind is currently grinding on the 1.16 million LIDAR points from
the example "lidaratm2" dataset. Will post results tomorrow..

Some "top" numbers:

loading those points with -zt grew to 418mb RAM during the "Registering
lines" phase, and took 2 minutes 20sec on a 2.8 P4.
  (gcc -g, no optimization)

'g.region vect=lidaratm2'  used 73mb RAM while it ran. (steady)

d.vect used 204mb RAM to draw (steady)
  (probably the next bottleneck at 8-10 million points)
