I cannot reproduce this.

The following sequence does what I'd expect:

$ d.mon start=x0
$ d.font.freetype font=luximr
$ echo hello world | d.text at=0,90 color=red
$ d.font.freetype font=luxisbi
$ echo hello world | d.text at=0,80 color=blue
