 Thanks Glynn.

 Tested* and backported to the 6.3.0 branch.

 [*] tested on a 32-bit system, before/after output files are binary equal.

 making the two modules big-endian safe is a well documented TODO, so no
 need to keep this bug report open for that; closing it.

 I'd still like to hear feedback from a 64bit user confirming that
 everything works now.
