Hamish,

I don't know how these spams are getting to the list.  They appear to be
from spammers who are not subscribed so they should be held for approval.
Perhaps someone mistakenly approved a big batch?

I would suggest that lists be set to automatically reject email from
unsubscribed senders so these things don't even end up in the "held for
approval" queue.

Incidentally, today (at Markus' request) ShawnB has implemented greylisting
on all email through "osgeo1" including all lists.osgeo.org address.  So
much of the spam may be stopped by that, as well as some amount of email
from legitimately subscribed folks whose email system is poorly configured.
